An Illinois federal court has handed prediction-market operators and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission a notable win in the ongoing fight over sports-event contracts, giving the industry a fresh foothold after setbacks in other jurisdictions. The ruling is important not just for Kalshi and similar platforms, but for the larger unresolved question at the center of these cases: when does a federally regulated event contract become something states can treat as gambling?

In a notable turn for crypto enforcement, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said it is joining Gemini Trust Company LLC in seeking relief from judgment in Commodity Futures Trading Commission v. Gemini Trust Company, LLC, pending in the Southern District of New York.
